OISTE Foundation part of ICANN constituencies
Geneva, Marina del Rey – 5th December 2013 – The Geneva based OISTE Foundation now belongs to one of the constituencies of ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). To reach another person on the Internet you have to type an address into your computer – a name or a number. That address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN coordinates these unique identifiers across the world. Without that coordination, we wouldn’t have one global Internet.
The International Secure Electronic Transactions Organization (OISTE) has obtained a place in one of the ICANN’s constituencies: the Not-for-Profit Organizations Constituency. This body provides a voice and representation to non-governmental organizations on how proposed and existing policies and initiatives impact their operations. ICANN rules the Internet. The Non-commercial Users Stakeholders Group (NCSG), to which OISTE now belongs, has the mission of providing democratic input on how ICANN serves the public interest.
Founded in 1998, OISTE was created with the objectives of promoting the use and adoption of international standards to secure electronic transactions, expand the use of digital certification and ensure the interoperability of certification authorities’ e-transaction systems. Its mission is to transfer the control and management of technologies dealing with digital identities to neutral authorities working for the public interest. Its vision is an Internet where users engage in online transactions and communications under systems of digital identity management that offer robust protection against fraud and theft, while protecting the fundamental right to privacy.
OISTE.ORG considers that there are important issues related to personal data management, digital identity, information security and the respect of the right to privacy that concern all Internet users and demand concerted actions between States. The OISTE Foundation founded in 1998 as a not for profit organization based in Geneva, Switzerland, regulated by article 80 et seq. of the Swiss Civil Code, is creating a “Switzerland on the Internet”, a set of policies, technologies and legislation allowing the Internet to provide Net neutrality which is increasingly becoming a subject of discussion. OISTE position is that Internet companies, social networks, cloud services, Internet service providers and governments should treat the data of users and organizations respectfully and that everyone has the right to free access to an open internet. Any erosion of net neutrality is an attack on the founding principles of the Internet. OISTE Rootkey is present in over 2 billion browsers and mobile browsers and Internet of Things devices. The OISTE root is ubiquitous, universal and certified by web certification authorities.
OISTE also holds special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the UN (ECOSOC).
